He has made two types of rings from magic dust, one he thinks will send the children to another world and one will bring them back from that world. He read at a nice even pace. Seen through the eyes of two children, Digory and Polly, the story weaves through several different worlds and examines the differences between good and evil hearts. They wanted to stay, but at the same time go back to Earth. So because of all those reasons, I wiped the dust off of it and read it.
But there are some important differences. Digory and Polly discover that they can walk through the passageway and reach the attics of the adjacent houses. The end of the book becomes a retelling of sorts of the story of the creation story from the bible. If you are new to the series I would recommend starting with this book first as you can get an idea of the world, how it was created and some of the history which will help make sense of things as you read the rest of the chronicles. I love to see how everything got started, the lamp post, the wardrobe, the White Witch. It bought back memories of books that I had read almost two decades ago, of secret passages and simple friendships, of the magic that waterfalls held, and talking animals! The book had such a beautiful quality to it and the illustrations in the edition I read were absolutely gorgeous.
To date, the Narnia books have sold over 100 million copies and been transformed into three major motion pictures. Upon meeting Uncle Andrew, Jadis makes him her new slave and starts on her mission to conquer the earth, starting with London. I will keep this review short as there is so much already written about this novel and instead of providing discussion questions, I will simply provide links. But then, Lewis' world is mostly a faultless one.
This week we learned about. It was great to re-visit an old favorite! That includes getting an apple from the evil source. Well, I guess I've read two now, but I feel like I should have read those a long time ago. Only you and I in this land know that yet. Lewis writes with such a fun and whimsical style that I was drawn into the story pretty quickly. After touching one of the rings, Polly suddenly disappears. Personally, I like this book just as well as any others in the series.
Digory was able to pull himself up and say no, while he was very tempted. No wonder it is a classic, and I cannot believe I never read this book, nor the series, before now. They find a bell with a hammer, an inscription inviting the finder to strike the bell. And that's fine with me. I don't have any reason to believe he is an Asian lion, but I again haven't read the entire series yet so that could be explored in future novels where Aslan spends his childhood as a small lion cub in Beijing before creating Narnia later in life. Through Jadis and Aslan, readers see the contrast between magic and nature.
The Witch has already eaten one of those apples. There is various ways to conduct surveys examples online or emails. The Magician's Nephew, although 6th in the publication order, chronologically it is the first in the series. Jadis tried to lure Digory into taking an apple to heal his mother. I re-read this series every few years because the stories are still incredibly enjoyable for me.
